A Casino bequeathed for my fun

April 29th, 2009

A fornicate affair with sports betting

Uncle Jerome’s portrait on the wall coated with a light yellow shade reminded me of the ace eclectic talent that had faded with his life. He had told me a lot on the Casino and he took me to the edge of having a fornicate affair with the spirit of sports betting. Now the very yellow takes me through the corridors of the big walled, tightly secured doors of the Casino, this time however through the evanescent memory that I wish to convey before it gets lost. We stopped at sports betting and the time that was, when my Uncle loved to bet on the major event of boxing. The sports book was filled with entrants, new, old, veterans and men on the lighter side of the affair like me who wanted to get the feel of the fun.

Tipple yourself with a pint of life

The sounds that swept the corners fell still, the eyes that strained to grab the beat fell cold and then with a sweep as of the foam filled tide on the barnacle filled shore, my uncle grabbed me to a lift of the centaury. My heart fell out through the mouth, we won the bet. This is no romantic visionary that was forced to tell the tale for want of a few dollars; this is an omen that reminds you of the prospects that are in store for tippling yourself with an excess of a life in the casino. A in poker, a sports book and the crowd that could vanish the very macabre life that you have been trotting on as of now; that was what my uncle had to show me and that’s exactly what I have in store for you.

On the footsteps of Jerome

Sports betting are now high on the list; what the game of poker hid behind the set of cards that could spread out the pot in front of you, sports book deals with a better thrill. It’s the screens that you have to be steady to look out for; it’s the passion that you have to gape at and it’s the game of chances you are in the casino for. A game theorist could move the strategies, and you could be the layman who dances in the glade; and a glade it is the Casino and the color that the bet has to offer. So the legality of sports betting being held high on the agenda, something forced to separate it from gambling and that was where my old blood mate Jerome showed me the way to trace the events that could bring out my best.

Gambling Heroes

April 27th, 2009

Gambling is one amongst the most eminent sources of entertainment today. It is also the cause of livelihood for many people. Gambling is all about wagering money usually to acquire more wealth or even things of material significance. Nowadays the enticement of gambling is at a surge. This is why apart from ordinary people it is commonplace to see celebrities gambling in some or the other big casino.

Broadly speaking gambling is of two forms. One that relates to playing casino games and the other to bets on various sports. For instance betting on horse race, car races, sports betting are all different types of gaming because in these cases too a person puts an amount of money at stake, calculates the odds etc. Besides this there is gambling related to gambling tables, deck of cards, slot machines and the like. This sort of gambling can be within the four walls of a casino or at home. Few decades from now, gambling at home meant lot of expense and work. For a person had to collect various ingredients such as cards, table, dice, coins etc. to play. But today with the advent of online gaming any gambling aficionado can relish gaming while relaxing on his couch. Moreover with the arrival of online gambling, gaming has reached in every corner of the world.

Some of the most common gambling games are poker, baccarat, blackjack, video poker, slot machines etc. People cherish these games across the globe. Poker is the well-known game of skill. In poker players make wagers into a central pot with fully or partially concealed cards. The winner of the game (who has the best combination of cards) takes away this pot. Blackjack is the game of card counting. It's also known as twenty-one and pontoon in British English. Blackjack is popular for card counting, a skill with which players can turn the odds of the game in their favor by making betting decisions based on the values of the cards known to remain in the deck. The game of video poker is quite popular in Las Vegas. It is played by placing a bet of one or more credits and by inserting money into the machine. After this the 'deal' button is to be pressed to draw the cards. Then the player gets a chance to hold or reject one or more of the cards in exchange for a new card, which is drawn by the player from the same virtual deck. This is followed by a machine evaluation of the hands. If the hand matches one of the winning hands in the posted pay schedule the machine offers a payout.

All these games have different rules and regulations. Prior to playing any game it is better to get acquainted with its rules first. Internet is a good way to know about these moneymaking games. it provides a rule book for almost every game.

Though gambling is also a good source of revenue yet is proclaimed illicit in most parts of the world. It is legalized only at few places such as Las Vegas. However all the players should take gambling in a sporty spirit only. Its addiction can be disastrous to the concerned person as well as his entire family.

Table Talk: What the Poker Players are Saying

April 27th, 2009

Poker tables are the great intimidating mystery of casinos to many. You love poker, Texas holdem, and all other poker card games, but you stay at the one armed bandit and blackjack for fear of the table. It seems so impersonal and like you are trading on someone's turf. So in order to fit in better, here is some poker table gambling lingo that may serve you well when you belly up to the table the next time.

First is "action." You will hear that word a lot in a casino. Action refers to the chance a player has to act. For instance, the dealer might tell you, when it's your term, that it is your action. .

Another is "ante". An ante is a tiny bet that is laced at the beginning of a poker hand right into the pot. This gets at least some money in the pot to start. In some games, like holdem games, there is often a blind instead of an ante. In the more traditional games like five card draw and stud games, though, antes are the rule much more than the exception.

A "blind" is a bet that is forced by rules. It is a bet put in by one or sometimes two players to the left of the dealer. This is just another way of getting money into the pot to start the hand. Blinds are more common in Texas Hold em and other such games, as opposed to "ante" games.

The "button" is essentially just a disk that is used to mark who the dealer is. Generally it ceramic disks that will help you know who is dealing, or who is holding the dealer spot when there is a casino dealer running the game. It is particularly useful when keeping track of who should be part of the blind.

Check raise is a confusing word to many. However, it is really quite simple. It is the event in which the player checks and then raises when the person behind them bets. Some people claim it is a dirty play, but almost every casino allows it so have at it!

If all the players at the table call before the flop in a game of Texas Holdem, then the pot becomes a family pot. On the other hand, one that is being contested by only two players is known as a heads up.

Of course there are as many poker terms and jargon out there as there are students. So, in order to better understand the game and feel more comfortable at the tables, take some time and learn the lingo. So take your time and feel more comfortable, and you will be sitting at those casino poker tables before you know it, racking, joking, and feeling good about being there.

Earn Money Playing Slot Machines… Or Not!

April 25th, 2009

Yay, what a life would that be - sitting behind the fancy slot machine, hitting buttons, sipping Bud Light and constantly cashing out big bucks, or coins. Sure, we know that casinos (even online casinos, yes) take their ″edge″ and earn hideous profits, but we don’t think about it when we step into a local casino or log on to our favourite online casino.

There’s always a constant battle between ″us″ (the players) and ″them″ (casino) and most of the time we’re pretty equal, until the slot machine suddenly turns into a money-leeching demon and starts eating our cash. So, after losing again, you ended up reading this article that has a title which gives you some hope.

Not that I want to sound rude, but reconsider because you won’t win your money back. Every bet you make equals giving your money away. Actually, there’s only one way to gain a profit visiting a casino - that’s when you sign up for a casino’s club card and go visit the place once in a while. You won’t play but always claim your ″Club Member Bonus″ free drink. After drinking it you should leave the place, but knowing you guys, that almost never happens.

For people who still believe that they can win with slot machines, I have listed some myths and rumors that aren’t true. Believing in them brings you debts and misery.

Some people believe that a poorly paying slot machine is about to hit big, maybe even a jackpot, so it would be smart to keep on playing or even raise the bets::

Well, actually there’s no difference if the machine has been paying poorly for a long time or not, because each spin is unique and totally random (IF, that is, you’re playing at least Casino Control Commission or a GamblingRalf approved casino and the machine uses well-known software). There’s different situations in land based casinos, because even if they claim that slot machines payout percentage is fixed and constant, it still happens sometimes. The payout percentage has been lowered to nonexistent and you can keep on playing and losing forever. There’s also no such thing as ″feeding the slot machine″ (this equals losing your money in order to win it back later) or ″milking it″.

Talking on a cell phone when gambling drives high tech slot machines crazy and helps to win big…or not! Actually some cell phones damage digital slot machines (especially before GSM coverage, when NMT was a superhit), but I haven’t heard any stories of players being able to cheat the casino with this trick and withdraw the money.

I know a few players who have had sudden $100,000 on their bankroll and weren’t paid, because the computer chip made a mistake (probably caused by cell phone). Every bet and win has to be proved by a slot machine’s previous winnings history, which is saved and constantly checked.

::Temperature of the coins affect slot machines and payout rates. Hot coin means more money!::

Another twisted fairytale. If you’re already so credulous, don’t visit casinos at all - you will gamble your brains off like that and go home crying. Computer chips have a RNG chip (Random Number Generator) that isn’t affected by anything, even not by the coin you have stored and heated up between your buns.

We could continue this list, but I’d rather not do it because it all comes down to one thing - in the long run there’s no way you can beat the slot machine and steal its edge. If winning was easy, there would be no casinos. There’s no simple ″How to Beat Slot Machine″ tactic, only some simple rules that should be followed to keep your losings as low as possible.

How to Make Money Through Online Casinos

April 25th, 2009

The age of the internet has changed how money can be made. Instead of reporting for work to get a decent pay, some can still do it while working from the home.

Making money through gambling is the same. Instead of going down to the casino, this can also be done in the comforts of one's home.

Online gambling can be played in various ways similar to those in the regular casino. Players can still place bets and win some money. The odds and payback percentages are the same as regular casinos with some sites offering higher than others.

To be able to play online, there are a few things that are needed.

1. First is a good internet connection. A game can last a long time and it would be awful to be interrupted especially if one is making a lot of money.

2. To those who really like to play, it is a good idea to set some time for it.

3. Some online sites are better than others. To know which site is good, the person can try it out for free.

4. To make sure that the person is playing in a reliable or trusted site, it is best to do some research first before throwing that money around.

There are two ways to play. The first one is web based. That means logging on to the site then playing the games. Games like this can be played in the browser plug-ins such as Macromedia Shockwave, Macromedia Flash or Java. Bandwidth is also needed to be able to get the sound, graphics and animations in the game.

The second is downloaded based online games. This will require the person to get the software to be able to play the games. Compared to the first, this type is faster since everything that the person needs comes is already in the computer and everything can happen without browser support.

The person should be aware that there is a risk whenever downloading something from an untrusted source. Malware or viruses may enter the system which could give the user problems.

New members who signup are given bonuses in the first deposit. These usually match a percentage with how much was deposited to a dollar minimum. Games that are currently offered online are blackjack, roulette, baccarat, poker, slot machines and Pai Gow Poker.

There has been reported to be a lot of fraudulent behavior on the part of online casinos. These establishments have refused to pay the winnings of people through cheating software. This is done in the hope that the player will continue to play and hopefully lose it. Such sites are called rogue casinos which is why it is important to first check the site out to avoid being victimized.

Currently, there is a bill in congress that might stop the proliferation of online gambling. This is because of allegations that it operates outside US law and is run by mobsters, drug dealers and terrorists who exploit on innocent people.

Online gambling is a 6 billion dollar industry that is regulated in more than 40 countries. Before deciding on playing the game, the person has to remember that there are risks involved.

Online gambling can be addictive. So it is best to be careful than losing everything including one's home.

Casino Games. Mathematics in the Gambling World

April 24th, 2009

In the industry of gambles the most if not all depends on precision of a mathematical approach. Operators of gambling-houses and professional gamblers know that but those who want to make a fortune at the casino do not think about it.

To understand the gamble, a player should know some determinatives the most important of which is expected value. This is a sum of all possible values of a random variable on probabilities of these values (it is rather easy if think it over). Often expected value is called simply average value. As to gambles expected value implies house edge that is expressed an average gain/loss ratio to the initial stake value. Mathematical expected value of every hands is an average gain/loss on given cards of a gambler. So the amount of expected values of all possible hands makes a general expected value of the gamble.

Thus expected value is not a ratio of an average loss to a total amount of money staked by a gambler as in some gambles (such as blackjack or poker) a gambler can increase the stake after the cards were distributed to him. Supplementary increase of the stake does not participate in calculation of expected value of the game/hands while determining initial bet, but it increases the risk. To compare different gambles under this parameter they use another value â€" an element of risk. The element of risk is a ratio of a medium gain/loss to a total amount of money staked on the table. This value also lets estimate and compare different gambles in matter of their profitability and riskiness.

The reason the better hand of a gambling house is calculated as to the initial stake and not as to a medium stake is such that if, for example, a gambler knows that in this game his better hand is 0.1% he can determine that a medium gain for every 100 dollars stake will be 10 cents.

There is also a concept of STANDARD DEVIATION, a value characterizing fluctuations of the bank playing this gamble. As a rule, it is used to determine probability of the fact that the result of given gamble session will be placed within some limits. Standard deviation of a final result after N stakes is the amount of standard deviation for one stake and square root of a number of initial stakes made in given gamble session. This is the case when supposed that a stake value is always constant. Probability of the fact that the result of the session can be within limits of 1 standard deviation from expected value is equal to 68.26%. Probability of the fact that the result of the session can be within limits of 2 standard deviations is equal to 95.46%. Probability of the fact that the result of the session can be within limits of 3 standard deviations is equal to 99.74%.

These concepts are used by everybody who takes a gamble as a business. They influence those who ignore mathematics. And the less a man related to a gambling business pays attention to mathematics, the less chances to win he has.

The Housewife’s Favourite Game

April 20th, 2009

Playing blackjack online is becoming the favourite pastime of housewives everywhere. Why is blackjack becoming so extremely popular? Well, gambling online allows housewives to play their favourite game right from the comfort of their own homes without the need to travel or endure the chaotic scene that brick and mortar casinos possess. Plus, there is no need to get all dressed up to engage in online gambling and there are no worries that a man might hassle you when all you want to do is enjoy the game. If you are more interested in gambling than you are in the dating scene, then gambling online might be just the kind of pastime for you. It's also fantastic fun!

Cara Thurston, a housewife fond of online gaming entertainment, explains why she loves online gambling : "When I gamble online I have the freedom to do what I want to do and I don't have other players judging me because I am a woman. When I play online blackjack, my identity remains anonymous for the most part and I can just enjoy the game."

Gambling online provides housewives like Cara the opportunity to spend their leisure time the way they want to—relaxing and enjoying a challenging game of blackjack or any of the other games offered at online casinos.

When gambling online you will find that you can either play the game of your choice for free or you can play for real money and prizes. Of course, where you choose to gamble online will determine whether or not cash and prizes are offered. There are many websites offering free gambling but if you want to get in on real money action you will need to visit one or more online casinos to begin playing for real money.

Typically, when gambling online for real money, you will find that you will be required to become a registered member at the online casino of your choosing. However, what is particularly nice about becoming a member at an online casino is that you will be offered signup bonuses for becoming a member. Signup bonuses are a percentage of the initial deposit you place in an account when you first signup at an online casino to begin gambling for money. Such a bonus can be used to place wagers on blackjack, poker, roulette and more.

Many online casinos offer you, as a new member, the opportunity to play several blackjack variants. Blackjack variants include Vegas Strip Blackjack, Atlantic City Blackjack, Multi-Hand Atlantic City Blackjack, European Blackjack, Spanish Blackjack, Triple 7's Blackjack, Bonus Blackjack, as well as others. Yet, blackjack is not the only game available and you will find fun at the slots, the roulette wheel and all the poker tables you can dream of when you gamble online.

You may be required to download special software to your computer so that you can get in on the gaming action. Typically the software applications that allow individuals to play games are easy to install and are free to you when you create an account. This software gives you the sense that you are really at the casino—that is, without all the hubbub and noise around you that you will typically find in a brick and mortar casino. If you are a housewife and you choose to gamble online you don't have to worry about the typical problems associated with travel and travel costs. You can enjoy a simulated casino setting in a safe environment.

Are there any risks associated with gambling online? In fact, there are risks associated with any kind of gambling, whether it is online or off. The biggest risk that you face while gambling is losing a lot of money. Gambling is just that—a risk, it is important when you are gambling that you take care not to become over eager—don't be willing to place just one more bet to get the big bucks. Anyone gambling should set a budget and stick to it. Once the money is gone it is gone and placing one more bet is only going to get you even deeper in the hole than the hand before. When you are gambling you can truly benefit when you know the right time to fold.

Gambling can become an addiction. Some people enjoy the high of winning and their mood will mirror that high, just as their mood will mirror the low they feel when they lose. In essence, when gambling becomes an obsession for you or when you begin to really rely on winning to feel good, a significant problem has begun and you will need to seek help for your gambling problem before it gets out of control. There is counselling available for anyone that has gambling problems and if you suspect that your gambling is an addiction, you should refrain from playing the game and seek out assistance for your problem immediately, before it becomes an all consuming and destructive issue. Make gambling fun and you will really enjoy the experience.

What is Online Poker

April 17th, 2009

Online poker, as the name suggests, is the game of poker played over the Internet. Online poker has been responsible for a dramatic increase in the number of poker players worldwide. Thanks in part, to the proliferation of online casinos, the craze for poker is spreading beyond the mega-rich, business-suited elite, allowing everyone a fair chance to place modest bets from the comfort of their own homes.

Statistics confirm the above. In January 2003, the total global daily cash game turnover for online poker was just $10 million (£5.3m) and in 2004 it rose to $60m (£32m). Now, $180m (£95m) is wagered in cash game pots in online poker every day! Not surprisingly, this number is expected to grow steadily every year.

How different is online poker compared to playing it on-site?

There are hundreds of portals offering online poker; most of them are, more or less, similar. The difference, if any, is usually in the gaming environment and the quality of interaction with other players. This could depend a lot on the popularity of the site, as popular gaming sites try to have certain in- built checks and attract serious gamblers who can in turn, enhance your overall gaming experience. Also, while some portals have a responsible, informative approach and offer considerable amount of content (news, tournament results, strategy articles, reviews of online card rooms, etc.), others attempt to act as mere conduits to other sites, normally where actual gambling games are offered.

Though people have many different views, as far as differences between and brick and mortar poker is concerned, most agree on at least few of the following:

Online venues are cheaper and easily accessible.

Online poker rooms are more player-friendly, as they offer suggestions, allow the players to play for low stakes and are very much suitable for beginners.

Online poker playing is a lot faster, as there’s no banter around the table. Though brick and mortar casino players consider this interplay a central element of the game, for most playing online, the stress is laid on mathematical calculations and actual moves. Fixed place or offline poker game is time consuming where the average rate of play is around thirty hands per hour while in online poker these delays, dealing and shuffling, are instant and thus the average play is faster due to ‘auto action’ buttons.

One disadvantage of playing online poker is that it is more vulnerable to certain types of fraud even though most poker sites have safety checks.

Unlike a bricks and mortar casino, you can play at more than one table at a time when you play online. So, you could log into more than one poker site simultaneously, which means that you don’t have to be as good a player to make the same amount of money online (since you increase your chances of winning by playing on multiple tables simultaneously)!

Some experienced players also feel that people who mostly play online poker could be at a disadvantage in a brick and mortar casino, as they don’t have opportunities to learn to study and influence body language.

Another differentiating feature of online poker is that it provides free money play, so that new players may practice without the risk of losing real money.

From the legal point of view, some legal issues are common. Online game poker is very legitimate and regulated in many advanced countries in Europe. Many online poker websites are certified by legal Game Commission bodies and major auditing firms like PWC (Price Waterhouse Coopers) to review the fairness of the shuffle and payouts.

Getting Started

Whether you are a professional or a novice online poker offers you a comfortable and interesting gaming environment and a safer (compared to brick and mortar casinos) means of learning how to play using smaller bets. There are numerous sites that offer guidelines and tips on learning how to play well. Here are some interesting poker- related terms to get you started:

Royal flush: high cards (ace, king, queen, jack) of the same suit in number sequence.

Straight flush: cards of the same suit in number sequence.

Four of a kind: cards of the same value (e.g. four queens).

Full house: three cards of one value, two of another.

Flush: all cards are of the same suit.

Straight: cards are in number sequence, but not of the same suit.

Three of a kind: three cards of the same value.

Two pair: two pairs of cards with the same value (e.g. queen, queen and king, king)

Pair: two cards with the same value.

Casino Career

April 15th, 2009

Casino gambling continues to expand around the World. Every year there are new casinos opening in existing markets and new venues around the World.

When most people think about employment in the gaming industry they naturally think of the dealers and casino personnel. It's only natural to think this way because those people are the ones out front and in the public eye. However the gaming industry is more than what you see on the gaming floor. Gaming has become an increasingly popular leisure activity, reflecting growth in both population and disposable income. Job growth is expected in established and growing gaming areas, such as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Atlantic City, New Jersey, and in other States likely to legalize gambling in the coming years.

Like nearly every business establishment, casinos have workers who direct and oversee day-to-day operations. Many job tasks of gaming managers, supervisors, and surveillance officers and investigators do not require interaction with casino games and patrons—but in the scope of their work, they must be capable of handling both.

Gaming managers. Gaming managers are responsible for the overall operation of a casino's table games. They plan, organize, direct, control, and coordinate gaming operations within the casino; formulate gaming policies; and select, train, and schedule activities of gaming personnel. Because their jobs are so varied, gaming managers must be knowledgeable about the games, deal effectively with employees and patrons, and be able to assess financial issues affecting casino growth or decline. These assessment abilities include measuring the profit and loss of table games and slot machines, understanding changes driving economic growth in the United States and so on.

Salaries vary by establishment and region. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data show that full-time gaming managers earned a median annual salary of $46,820 in 1999. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $26,630, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $96,610.

Gaming supervisors. Gaming supervisors oversee gaming operations and personnel in an assigned area. Circulating among the tables, they ensure that all stations and games are attended to for each shift. It also is common for supervisors to interpret the casino's operating rules for patrons. Supervisors may also plan and organize activities for guests staying in their casino hotels. Periodically, they address—and make adjustments for— service complaints.

Gaming supervisors must have leadership qualities and good communication skills. They need these skills both to supervise employees effectively and to greet patrons to encourage return visits. Most casino supervisory staff has an associate or bachelor's degree. Regardless of their educational background, however, most supervisors gain experience in other gaming occupations before moving into supervisory positions because knowledge of games and casino operations is essential for these workers.

Slot key persons. Slot key persons, also called slot attendants or slot technicians, coordinate and supervise the slot department and its workers. Their duties include verifying and handling payoff winnings to patrons, resetting slot machines after completing the payoff, and refilling machines with money. There are no formal educational requirements to enter this occupation, but completion of slot attendant or slot technician training is helpful. BLS data show that median hourly earnings of slot key persons were about $10.28 in 1999. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $7.02, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $17.83.

Gaming cage workers. Gaming cage workers conduct financial transactions for patrons. They sell gambling chips, tokens, or tickets to patrons or to other workers for resale to patrons. They also receive and convert the gaming chips, tokens, or tickets to currency at patrons' requests. Some cage workers may also accept patrons' credit applications and verify their credit references, enabling patrons to establish in that casino either a check cashing authorization or credit account.

Gaming dealers. Gaming dealers operate table games such as craps, blackjack, and roulette. Standing or sitting behind the table, dealers provide dice, dispense cards to players, or run the equipment. Some dealers also monitor the patrons for infractions of casino rules. Gaming dealers must be skilled in customer service and in executing their game. Dealers determine winners, calculate and pay winning bets, and collect losing bets. Because of the fast-paced work environment, most gaming dealers are competent in at least two games—usually blackjack and craps.

Nearly all gaming dealers are certified. Certification is available through 2- or 4- year programs in gaming or a hospitality related field. Experienced dealers, who often are able to attract new or return business, have the best job prospects. Dealers with more experience are placed at the "high roller" tables. Median hourly earnings for gaming dealers were $6.20 in 1999, according to BLS. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $5.38, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $9.53.

In addition to specific requirements for each occupation, all gaming workers must meet some general requirements. For example, a high school diploma or GED usually is required for entry-level jobs. And applicants for gaming or casino jobs must be at least 21 years old. All gaming workers are required to have a license issued by a regulatory agency, such as a casino control board or commission. Licensure requirements include photo identification, residency in the State where applicants anticipate working, and payment of a fee. The licensing application process also includes a background investigation.

In addition to a license, all gaming workers need superior customer service skills. Casino gaming workers provide entertainment and hospitality to patrons, and the quality of their service contributes to an establishment's success or failure. Therefore, gaming workers need good communication skills, an outgoing personality, and the ability to maintain their composure even when dealing with angry or demanding patrons. Personal integrity also is important because workers handle large amounts of money.

Each casino establishes its own requirements for education, training, and experience. Almost all casinos provide some in-house training in addition to requiring certification. The type and quantity of classes needed may vary.

Like any job, gaming work has its good and bad points. One of the advantages is the work environment: the atmosphere in casinos is generally fun filled and often considered glamorous. In addition, advancement opportunities in casino gaming depend less on workers' previous casino duties and titles than on their ability and eagerness to learn new jobs. For example, an entry-level gaming worker, such as a slot key person, eventually might advance to become a dealer or card room manager or to assume some other supervisory position.

Internet Gambling Bill

April 15th, 2009

In the House of Representatives, there is a bill (H.R. 4777) that was introduced by Representative Bob Goodlatte, of Virginia. The bill, entitled ″Internet Gambling Prohibition Act″, was introduced to the House of Representatives on February 16, 2006 and was sent to the Committee on the Judiciary on the same day. The bill is one that, if passed, will affect all Americans who want to be able to gambling onlineâ€"it will affect those promoting gambling oriented affiliate programs too.

The Path

It’s first important to point out that the path of this bill become official United States law is a long and difficult one. The bill has to go through many steps in the House first. H.R. 4777 has 129 cosponsors, which is roughly 25% of the representatives in the House. It does have a good shot at passing the House in the coming months.

If it passed in the House, it will be sent to the Senate, where it will have to undergo the same process as it did in the House. The bill will be sent to a committee, reports will be written and so forth. If not even one word is changed and no rider is attached, it will be placed up for vote. Should even one word be altered or a rider attached, it will need to repeat the cycle at the House of Representatives.

Should the bill be one of the few that survives this path, the President will have to sign it into law or veto it. If the bill does not make it all this way before the current session ends, the bill is quashed and will need to be re-introduced next session and start all over again.

The Bill

This main purpose of this bill is to make online gambling illegal and to make sure the language of the text includes the Internet and not simply ″phone lines.″ H.R. 4777 seeks to amend Section 1081 of Title 18 of the United States Code. Here’s a breakdown of the language updates.

1.″wire communication facility″ will be replaced with ″communication″.

2.″aid of wire, cable,″ will have satellite and microwave added to the list.

3.″other like connection between″ will have ″(whether fixed or mobile)″ added to the description.

4.Adding definitions for: bet or wager, gambling business, money transmitting service, money transmitting business, foreign jurisdiction, and others.

The bill will amend Section 1081 to be stronger and more complete. The whole concept is to do away with limiting terms like ″wires″ and replace it with an all-encompassing term like ″communication facility″. That way the law remains strong no matter what inventions the future holds.

Conclusion

The bill has a long way to go to become law, but if it does, it will strengthen Section 1081.
